Columbia Basin: Acres of grass seed in the Columbia Basin have been significantly reduced. Te fields that remain look good and are progressing well. Irrigators have been going for some time and growers are giving their full attention to managing the crop for yields and quality.
Minnesota: A lack of snowfall this past winter had many perennial ryegrass seed producers in Minnesota concerned there would be significant winter kill. However, the crop recovered better than expected and acreage loss is estimated at around 20 percent. It is too early to get an indication of seed yields but with fewer acres being harvested than the previous year, there will be less seed available.
Market Trends: We’ve seen strong consumption during the early spring season of 2024. Te movement has slowed some as we’ve gotten into late spring, largely due to weather events and planting windows closing. Te uncertainty of the American and global economy still lingers, and customers have been cautious with purchasing—only buying what they have an immediate need for. Generally speaking, there won’t be a shortage of seed in the marketplace as we move into the fall season. Markets appear to be mostly stable and we’re not expecting large fluctuations in price this fall.

new variety in 2022 by MVS. Gateway is a cold-tolerant, medium-coarse zoysiagrass with high patch disease resistance, extremely low seed head production, and the ability to perform at a broad range of cutting heights. Its aggressive recovery paired with low input ability, allows it to rebound in high-traffic situations. With parents selected from Eastern Kansas, this Southern Illinois University cultivar has boasted a stable, uniform pedigree since 1987.
In his 2024, crop and marketing report, Will Nugent, President of Bethel Farms, in Arcadia, Florida, reported, “We are thrilled to introduce Gateway Zoysia, developed in collaboration with MVP Genetics, which is tailored perfectly for golf courses and residential uses in Florida.” Nugent added that Bethel is continuing to collaborate with MVP, anticipating it will lead to the introduction of other new grasses.

Weather: Spring in the Pacific Northwest has had ideal growing weather for turfgrass. Minnesota and Canada have had drought pressures and are expected to see decreased yields.
Strong root development is exhibited by MVP Genetics’ Gateway Zoysiagrass.
Market Outlook: MVP Genetics was formed five years ago as a division of Mountain View Seeds (MVS), the 24-year-old branch of parent company, Pratum Coop, to launch the vegetative Bermudagrass IronCutter. Tat enabled MVS to concentrate on the seeded grasses. MVP Genetics now is expanding our portfolio of vegetative grasses. Tat includes Gateway Zoysiagrass (vegetative) (NTEP Entry Code ZOYSIU) which was introduced as a

Trends: Retail sales continue to trend to pre-Covid norms after two years of little market movement. Reorders were lackluster later this spring causing market stagnation and increased carry-over. International sales were better than in 2023 but did not reach the volumes of historical sales. Professional markets in previous years had fared better, but the spring of 2024 has been below expectations due to weather conditions, competition, and the trend of the consumer purchasing only as needed as the news of an abundance of seed is prevalent.
Production: Tere is a high potential for high-quality and abundant seed production for 2024. Pollination was just starting to occur during the week of May 20, as this
