ONE HUNDRED YEARS AND STILL COUNTING
By Vicki Marsh I
t has been my pleasure to know two women who have made it to their 100th birthday and beyond! One was my grandmother, Mary Edith Boyd Pearson, who lived in Gastonia, North Carolina. She
personality) when she was well into her 80s, and had raised eight chil- dren during the Depression. She was a mighty prayer warrior. The other is Ann Huckabee of Greenville, South Carolina. Ann was born to Charles and Grace Townsend in Greenville, SC but moved to Savannah, GA for her father’s work when she was 18 months old. They lived there for ten years and she joined the church when she was eleven years old. When they moved back to Greenville, she became a member of Greenville ARP Church and she has been a faithful member ever since. (If the church doors are open, she is probably there!) Her family and the congregation of Greenville ARP helped her to cel- ebrate her 100th in the Fellowship Hall on May 27, 2024. When Ann was a child, her mother made her take Elocution lessons (memorizing and then reciting poems) and sometimes there were competitions. The amaz- ing thing is that she can still recite MANY of those poems today! She is a regular part of the entertainment at church retreats, Ladies’ Christmas events at church, and other occasions. Some of the topics of the poems are “When I grow old and live with my kids”, Cholesterol, and a differ- ent version of the night before Christmas. Poems are always delivered with a twinkle in her eye and we all enjoy when Ann shares some of the poems that she has learned! Before she retired, she worked as an administrative secretary at Caro- lina Federal Savings and Loan. She met her husband, Ted Huckabee and they were married at Greenville ARP Church. They had three children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her favorite “new” thing that she enjoys is her computer. She sends
and receives emails and has found many games to play on it. Along with her computer time, she enjoys reading a lot, playing Scrabble, Church activities and is always ready to go do whatever! Ann joined Women’s Ministries when she was eighteen and is still a very active member of the Mary Beckham Circle at Greenville ARP Church. When I asked her what is her secret for making it to 100 years, she replied “God’s Will”. The advice that she would give to someone about how to live their best life is: “Trust God and let Him take care of everything. Live looking forward to what God has planned for you. Don’t be afraid to have fun!”
