Misleading
BY REV. RON BEARD Sherwood and his parents had a very odd conversation one eve-
ning after watching television before bedtime. There were a lot of commercials to which Sherwood usually paid no attention. But that evening, Sherwood noticed a commercial that made no sense to him. The ad was for a medicine. It was supposed to help anyone who
takes it to live a better life. It showed pictures of people talking about how much the medicine helped them. The problem with the ad came at the end of the ad. There was a list in much smaller print of the pos- sible terrible side effects from taking it. They talked about the fact that the list of bad results was in small print and did not have any pictures or stories about the side effects. Not like the one about the good effect the medicine had. Sherwood said that didn’t seem right. It was almost like hiding any bad results from people watching the ad. The three of them decided that it was very much like a lie to say that sort of thing in an ad that was supposed to be helpful to folks who had a problem that the medicine was supposed to cure. The truth is that there was a scary list of much worse problems possible if you took the medicine. One of them even mentioned dying as a possible side effect! They talked about the sort of things that too many people think
aren’t lies but just misleading. Dad said we need to read God’s word just like we always do when we have questions. “There are a lot of verses which talk about truth and lies,” he said. “And when you read them, it’s plain to see that God loves the truth, but he hates lies. When you mislead someone, it’s the same sort of thing. We are supposed to be trustworthy people who try to be very careful about how we talk to others. We need to take care not to mislead or lie to others. If we don’t, we are not respecting God’s Word.
