in a designated common area like by your mailboxes. Put on a community front window or yard scavenger hunt and ask neighbors to display an animal, highlight a place they love, or try some Post-it pixel art.

Relax rules about sidewalk chalk and ask families to write encouraging notes to each other. I know many families take a lot more walks together than before and many people have taken up running now that gyms are closed. Nothing gets me through some hard miles like a little “we got  

Eventually, stay at home orders will be lifted and we’ll all be allowed to hang out close together again. We should keep todays guidelines in mind when planning spring and summer events, and associations can encourage owners to stay safer in the future.

Plan a spring or summer garage sale and use association money to buy every participating home a bottle of hand sanitizer. I also encourage purely social events like a block party or potluck in the park or grill out on the common deck. Use your common space, whatever you have, to eat together. Do it only when government guidelines permit social gatherings and only if you have the room for people to spread out and be together safely.

Everyone knows each other. They plan projects, as much as they can, around the needs of the people in their buildings. Behind each door in your community is another human with interests, talents and ideas to share. They are families who will complement each other in bringing out the best in their communities by gathering, volunteering, and working towards making their associations beautiful, functional, and harmonious.

During this unusual time, relax rules about sidewalk chalk and ask your community’s families to write encouraging notes to each other.
