over the years had been in a less formal setting over a cup of coffee. She would always challenge me to think on how my decisions and actions not only effected myself, but others around me.

A question she would faithfully ask me was, “Sean, what happens if you plant potatoes?” When I was younger, I thought there was a very deep philosophical   her subtle way of reminding me that I am in control of what I plant in my garden. That garden could be a relationship, a personal judgement to be made, a parenting or business decision or simply deciding what I want out of any situation. And the answer is simple. If I plant potatoes, I’m going to harvest potatoes. Plain and simple. Whatever the seed may be, the crop will yield the same. If I plant positivity, I reap its outcome. If I plant negativity, how can I expect anything but an undesirable (or spoiled) harvest?

We must go to war with negativity because it is simply unavoidable. How do you go to war against it? This  to combat against negativity is to emphatically REFUSE to allow it to take root in you. What this looks like in a practical sense is; not participating in a conversation that breaks others down, refraining from pointing out someone’s shortcomings or gossiping about them, being solution oriented when faced with a challenge  at fault. Make it your aim after reading this article to see how many times in the next 24 hours you can shift discouraging environments you are in towards encouraging ones. Take these 24 hours and listen to positive media messaging and music. Watch only a positive show or movie tonight when you go home. Show negativity the curb for 24 hours and see how your emotional and physiological state changes.

Lastly, a great friend and mentor once told me, “When you kick a can of honey, honey spills out. When you kick a can of acid, acid spills out. The kick did not create the contents, it only revealed it.” As an adult, I am in control of what I allow to enter my eyes and ears and thus determining what will or will not take root in my mind, body and soul. Let us all set our sights on becoming individuals who exude positivity in every situation we possibly can. That  of injustices you encounter. What it means is that our response to everyday life challenges consists of honey spilling from us, not acid.
