Thomas House Family Shelter, Garden Grove In the Southern California region on April 6, the Emerg- ing Leaders organized and ran another highly successful event benefitting residents of the Tomas House Family Shelter, a Garden Grove-based organization that provides temporary shelter to unhoused families. opportunities with them before and thought it would be a nice way to give back by providing dinner for the families,” Canul said. EL members from various AGC of California member companies enthusiastically jumped in to help. Te volunteer evening, sponsored by industry partner Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply, featured featured a taco truck dinner. EL members then entertained the kids with a variety of pre-planned activities while the parents attended an edu- cational session. In total, the event served over 65 people, including 50 kids from more than 20 families. More than 20 board games were donated by TYLin, United Rentals, Isec, and OC 405 Partners for the families at the shelter. “It was a humbling experience to participate in this and go out and do some good in the community,” Canul noted. “Te networking events that EL does are fun, but it was really nice to do something that was different where you could get to know (fellow EL members) in another way.”
Martha’s Kitchen, San Jose In the Bay Area, Jake Gallau, a senior project engineer with Blach Construction and an EL board member, led a small team of volunteers in a food distribution event at Martha’s Kitchen in downtown San Jose on April 18. Martha’s Kitchen provides hot meals and groceries to homeless and underfunded individuals. Gallau said he was drawn to the opportunity “to be part of a bigger community effort helping others” for the volunteer event. “It was a super rewarding day and honestly just really
energizing to get out there and help,” said Gallau, who esti- mated they supplied several hundred people with groceries and warm food that night.
