PROJECT ENGAGE UPDATE
Participants Building New Skills and Knowledge
BY CAROL EATON
M
ore than half a year since roughly three dozen con- struction industry profes-
sionals embarked on an intensive lead- ership journey known as Project Engage, members of the program’s inaugural class have steadily developed skills and gained insight and knowledge they will carry with them for a lifetime. Skills like learning how to become a leader worth following. Enhanced communication skills. And the important role that a well-honed sense of self-re- flection can play in increasing their impact as leaders within their respective organizations. We continue our series of short spot-
lights on Project Engage, an intensive leadership program by the dynamic part- nership of AGC of California, Procore and GiANT, by talking with participants Lisa

Becerra and Asha Virlouvet to find out what have been their biggest takeaways from the program to date.
Lisa Becerra
Becerra has worked as quality control manager for the Laborers Training Trust Fund of South- ern California
and Arizona for the past 11 years, and has spent a total of 15 years with the organization that trains laborers in a vast array of construction curricula. So what has been different about
Project Engage for her, and has anything surprised her about the program? “I’m an advocate of the notion that
training, education and application are keys to mastering any concept,” Becerra said. “Project Engage has introduced me to something completely different, which is the importance of self-reflection. First and foremost, the focus is on me. I have to acknowledge my shortcomings, make necessary adjustments and learn how to interface with others’ work styles. Only then can I attempt to effect change in my organization.” Becerra also noted, “Te idea that we need to be the leaders that others desire to follow was introduced to me by Project Engage. ‘Be a leader worth following.’ I can’t stop repeating this phrase to myself and counterparts! Additionally, I really appreciate the accountability piece. My coach, Courtney Jordan, is constantly checking in with me. She holds me ac- countable to benchmarks I’ve set.”
