UNITED IN ONE SPIRIT / UNIDOS EN UN MISMO ESPIRITU Julio De Leon
Whether teaching in school or directing a music ministry in a parish, we are all music educators. Forming the minds of our assemblies in faith—especially those of our young people—is an immense responsibility. Music has the power to educate and evangelize—to share the gifts of diversity while also unifying our communities—and finally, to make a life-long impact by empowering those who engage with it.

Breakout C8 SHINE LIKE GOLD TESTED IN FIRE
Lorraine Hess Struggles in life can make us “bitter” or “better”. As Christians, how we carry our crosses can be opportunities for evangelization. Like gold in the fire, we are purified until the gold reflects the image of its creator. Through storytelling, faith-sharing, and music, we will explore how we can allow the Holy Spirit to purify us, so we can shine with the light of Christ and help others in their times of suffering.

LORD, SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT AND RENEW PARISH CONFIRMATIONS Michael Ruzicki and Timothy Johnston
Like on the day of Pentecost, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at confirmation “unites us more firmly to Christ” and his Church (CCC 1303). The “sacrament of confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace” (CCC 1285). With an overview of the newly translated texts of the Order of Confirmation, this workshop provides musicians and liturgists with ideas for a collaborative approach to catechizing about and preparing for the Confirmation liturgy. Participants will learn about best practices for celebrating the rite, guidance on selecting Scripture readings, prayer texts, and music.

OBBLIGATO INSTRUMENTS IN LITURGICAL MUSIC Kathleen Basi
Orchestral instruments (string, woodwind, brass) can greatly enhance our communities’ sung prayer. While many of our hymnals now offer instrumental parts for C and B-flat instruments, this session will go a step further. We’ll discuss range, how to pick lines from choral and keyboard parts, when to double melody and when to get out of the way, and (time permitting) fundamentals of improvisation. If you play from the instrumental parts in your worship resource but have always wanted to take it to the next level, this is the session for you.
