2023 FEDA ANNUAL CONFERENCE — Special Guest Presentation

Assessing the Global Political Climate

Former White House Chief of Staff General John Kelly will share his leadership lessons and perspectives on the global political climate during a special guest presentation at the FEDA Annual Conference.

A

s the saying goes, “There is no better friend, no worse enemy than a U.S. Marine.” It’s a sentiment that Gen. John Kelly exemplifi ed throughout his 45-year career in the Marine

Corps, from his beginnings serving in an infantry company to his eventual leadership of U.S. Southern Command, a joint command of 1,200 military and civilian personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. By the time he retired in 2016, Kelly was the longest-serving general in the armed forces. He then continued to serve his country as U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security and later White House Chief of Staff for the Trump administration. Throughout his lengthy career from sergeant to general, Kelly earned a reputation for strong, no-nonsense leadership, which is one of the many reasons FEDA is honored to welcome him as the special guest presentation speaker at the 2023 FEDA Annual Conference. Kelly’s presentation will begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 26 following the FEDA Gold Awards Breakfast. Conference attendees will learn what business leaders should know about the global political climate as well as how organizations can assess situations and alter losing strategies. Kelly will lay out a foundation for successful leadership even in the most diffi cult times that begins with having a clear vision, a deep sense of care and passion for those in an employer’s charge, a mandate for initiative, and a philosophy of delegation and support.

No matter the situation, Marines know there are certain values that can help carry them through. First and foremost, Marines are known for their commitment, not only to the mission but to each other. It’s why the military branch’s motto is Semper Fidelis (“always faithful”). It is that sense of commitment that compelled Kevin

Woods, president of Globe Food Equipment, to sponsor Kelly’s special guest presentation at the FEDA Annual Conference. “Given not only my experience in the Marine Corps but also knowing (FEDA Chairman) Dave Stafford’s experience as a Marine, it seemed fi tting for Globe to sponsor Gen. Kelly,” he says. “I am interested in learning more about his time as chief of staff and his efforts to bring order to a chaotic administration,” Woods continues, “and his take on current geo-political issues like the Ukrainian war and the tensions between the U.S. and China — specifi cally relating to the Republic of China Taiwan as Globe has a presence there.” The effect of global politics on business is especially important at this moment, as longstanding norms and alliances are being tested, and governments posture for a greater impact on the world stage. Kelly will dive into this friction by discussing the trends, risks and potential rewards as the geopolitical landscape evolves from the South China Sea to Washington D.C.

Legacy of Service

As someone who achieved high positions in both the worlds of military service and government leadership, Kelly is well-positioned to address those topics and provide insight into the global political climate and effective organizational leadership during diffi cult times. It’s what he has trained all his life for, after all.

Gen. Kelly enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1970 and served as a non-commissioned offi cer until his discharge in 1972. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1976 with the goal of becoming a Marine Corps offi cer and began a long and distinguished career at bases and on ships throughout the world, in peace and at war.
