One afternoon Sherwood ran to the front of the house. He shut the door quickly, and his mom asked him what was the matter. It was a pretty day. No rain, and it was warm. Sherwood said, “I saw Joey coming down the street.” “But Joey is your best friend,” his mom said. “Why are you hiding from him? You
need to go out to the playground with him.” Sherwood told his mom that he did not want to see Joey because Joey had done a bad thing. “He’s not my friend anymore. I hate him because of what he did.” “What on earth did Joey do?” Mom asked. Sherwood said, “It doesn’t matter what he did; it was really bad. When I saw him
coming to our house, I didn’t want to see him. I don’t ever want to see him again.” Mom said, “That doesn’t sound good. That’s not like you, Sherwood.” “I don’t care. It’s his fault for doing the bad thing.” Sherwood said. Mom replied, “What if he was coming to the house to apologize to you for the bad thing.” Sherwood answered, “I don’t care why he was coming. It makes no difference; I’ll be mad at him forever.” “But Sherwood,” mom said, “What about forgiving someone. If he’s sorry he did
a bad thing and wants to apologize don’t you think you should listen? Remember what the Bible says we need to forgive others like God forgives us?” “Mom,” Sherwood said, “it’s hard. And I’m mad, and I don’t want to forgive him.” Mom told Sherwood that not forgiving Joey was bad also whatever Joey had done. Wrong things are just wrong. Like Joey
needs to be sorry, you need to be forgiving. Sherwood went to the front of the house, opened the door and there stood Joey. He said “I’m so sorry for what I did and I wish I had not done it.” Thinking about what mom said, Sherwood realized that forgiveness is truly a good thing and said, “Let’s go to the play- ground and not waste today.”
