Planting Christ Presbyterian Church, ARP Fernandina Beach, Florida
Tom and Ann arrived in Fernandina Beach, from Charlotte, NC, in November 2021 to begin planting Christ Presbyterian Church for the ARPC. This work is a “scratch plant,” so the Hawkes’ moved to Fernandina without knowing a person in the city. Tom was reared in Jacksonville, FL, at the beaches, so coming to Fernandina, just a few miles from his hometown, is a real homecoming. Ann is a professional educa- tor specializing in therapy for children with learning needs. A native of coastal New Hampshire, Ann is delighted to return to the ocean after decades away. She is excit- ed to see the birth of another new church after helping to plant a church with Tom in Tom comes to the ARP after 35 years of serving in the PCA as a church planter, developer of church planters, and senior pastor. Having earned a Ph.D. at the Lon- don School of Theology studying John Calvin’s approach to training his church planters, Tom has a heart to see the ARP become even more effective in reaching people and starting new churches. Tom also serves as the Director of Church Plant- ing for the Florida Presbytery and teaches church planting for Birmingham Theo- logical Seminary. Tom and Ann have been networking among Christians and non-Christians to build a leadership community. Usu-
ally, in a scratch plant, it takes twelve to eighteen months to build a core team, so the Hawkes’ hope to have a team built later this year. Then, after meeting for some months with the leadership community, they hope to launch a public wor- ship service, God willing, in late 2023. They have been meeting people through the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, a cycling club, a new-comers club, a pickleball league, their new neighborhood, and the Community Bible Study, among others. The Lord has blessed their early efforts with a growing network of acquaintances, among whom are several families who are already interested in the church plant. Tom and Ann ask prayer for: meeting and caring for new people, sharing the gospel, forming a leadership team for the plant, and healing for Tom’s left knee, which has been keeping him off the bike lately.
