Dentistry Horses need regular dental care to maximize feed efficiency, reduce the risk of colic and enhance performance. Annual dental floats accomplish this for most patients. The use of motorized “power tools” and safe, reliable sedatives have greatly changed dental care for our equine patients, allowing the doctor to balance the horse’s mouth and correct den- tal abnormalities quickly and painlessly. This keeps both you and your horse smiling!

r. Miska Paget, DVM, is Prescott, Arizona newest large animal Veter- inarian opening her practice, Williamson Valley Large Animal Veteri- nary Practice, PLLC.

Relocating to the Prescott area, from Ramona, California.

Dr. Paget is known in the equine world as Dr. Miska, from the moment I met her, and Keith her husband, and I knew this is who I want caring for my horses. She truly loves her horses as much as she will love yours. A Veterinarian that will do house calls only, and will provide excellent care.

Dr. Paget is a 1998 magna cum laude graduate of Colorado State University. After graduation, she interned in New Jersey, learning about equine neonatal and peri- natal medicine. Next, she did a residency at University of California, Davis, spe- cializing in Internal Medicine. During her time at Davis, she participated in studies and wrote research papers, learning a lot during those months. The lesson that was most compelling to her was how much she loved private practice and building relationships with her clients and their animals.

Pre-purchase Examination Whether it is a rescue or an investment, learning as much as possible about your potential new equine partner is im- perative. A pre-purchase examination is a comprehensive exam designed to gather information about your potential purchase. This examination takes approximately 2 hours to complete and includes a general physical examination (in- cluding GI , cardiac, respiratory and integumentary (skin) exam), ophthalmic (eye) examination, external genitalia examination, detailed lameness examination, neurologic examination, discussion of conformation, and archiving of blood for 6 months for possible future testing (sedatives or NSAIDs/pain relievers).

The following will assist the doctor in compiling the most representative information about your future purchase: The horse should have up-to-date foot care, but avoid having the horse shod or trimmed during the two weeks preceding the examination. A firm/concussive level surface and an arena are ideal for the lameness portions of the exam. If the horse does not know how to work on a lunge line, a round pen should be available.

The Pagets are avid equestrians who may be seen out on the trail exercising themselves and their horses, keeping those hearts beating, healthy and strong.
