HIGHLY PATHOGENIC AVIAN INFLUENZA CONFIRMED IN KENTUCKY
Since February 2022, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influ- enza (HPAI) H5N1 Eurasian lineage goose/Guangdong
H5 Clade 2.3.4.4b has been detected in seventeen (17) states and has resulted in the depopulation of more than 13 million birds to date. Laboratory findings suspect the introduction of this strain of virus to commercial and backyard operations is via infected migratory waterfowl. Although, no human cases of this strain of avian influenza viruses have been detected in the United States, the Cen- ter for Disease DC is continuing to monitor the situation (
www.cdc.gov/flu/avianflu).
Kentucky was the second state to confirm avian influenza in commercial poultry operations. On Feb. 14, 2022, USDA and state officials announced a confirmed case of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Ken- tucky. On Friday, Feb. 11, 2022, the veterinarian from a commercial broiler flock in Fulton County, KY, contacted the State Veterinarian regarding increased mortality and significant decrease in water consumption in the 46 day old broilers in one of the 12 houses on the premises. Sam- ples collected tested presumptive positive for H5 avian influenza at the Murray State University Breathitt Vet- erinary Center Laboratory (BVC) on Feb. 11. Samples were transported by USDA personnel to National Veteri- nary Services Laboratory (NVSL). On Feb. 12, 2022, the NVSL confirmed H5N1 Eurasian lineage goose/Guang- dong H5 Clade 2.3.4.4b. Depopulation of 231,398 birds was completed on Feb. 15, 2022, and premises remains under quarantine during in-house composting.
On the evening of Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022, the man- ager from a commercial meat turkey flock in Webster County, KY, contacted the State Veterinarian regarding increased mortality over three days and decreased water consumption in 117 day old turkeys in one of six hous- es on the premises. Samples collected that evening tested non-negative presumptive positive at the state laborato-
ry and NVSL confirmed H5N1 Eurasian lineage goose/ Guangdong H5 Clade 2.3.4.4b. Depopulation of 53,286 turkeys was completed on Feb. 15, 2022, and premises remains under quarantine during in-house composting.
In response to the confirmation of HPAI H5N1 in Ken- tucky, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Office of State Veterinarian and the Kentucky USDA Veterinary Services staff initiated a foreign animal disease response which included activation of an incident management team and establishment of an incident command post in Fulton, Kentucky. Response activities included designa- tion of a 10km control zone and a 10-20km surveillance zone around each infected premises. Control zone weekly surveillance testing of commercial premises and statistical commercial sampling of the surveillance zone were nega- tive permitting control area release for Webster Control Area on March 12, 2022, and release for Fulton Control Area on March 15, 2022.
Due to the continued spread of H5N1 in wild and domes- tic birds, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture Office of State Veterinarian and the Kentucky Poultry Federa- tion encourage enhanced biosecurity for all poultry oper- ations, specifically measures to prevent poultry exposure to migratory waterfowl or areas visited by these waterfowl. Additionally, poultry with clinical signs compatible with Avian Influenza (increased mortality, decreased produc- tion, decreased water consumption, respiratory signs or neurologic signs) shall be reported to the sick bird hotline of 1-866-536-7593.
