Instructions Mix The Dough:

• Soak the raisins in warm water for an hour and drain while mixing the yeast part. • Wake up the yeast in the warm water and sugar, about 10 minutes or until spongy. • Whisk the eggs well in a large mixing bowl, then add the milk and butter. Add the yeast mixture and mix well. • If you plan to use raisins, coat the well-        helps keep the raisins from popping out of the dough while rising and/or frying. -  into the dough.

• Cover and let rise until doubled.

Fry the New Year’s Cookies: • Heat a pot of oil to 350°. • Drop dough into hot oil with a tablespoon. Fill the surface of the oil with doughballs, but not so they stick together. Turn them when the bottom turns golden brown. • When both sides are golden brown, re- move from oil to a paper towel lined pan. • Dust them with the sugar of choice. Our family used powdered sugar, my husband’s used granulated sugar. My sister made doughnut glaze. Yum.

• Eat warm with a mug of hot, black coffee. January/February 2025

The colder weather is upon us and the change of seasons is refreshing. I know some don’t like the cold but in the South I am welcoming it with open arms and warm sweaters!

And what goes together with sweater weather? Soups and stews! This one is my favorite dishes from Daniel’s plan!

Veggie, Lentil, and Chicken Sausage Soup

Ingredients • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 8 cups assorted vegetables onion, carrot, celery, bell 

• 2-3 cloves garlic minced • salt and pepper to taste • 2 links 6 ounces cooked chicken sausage, chopped into bite size pieces

Instructions

Heat olive oil in a large soup pot and sauté vegetables and minced garlic 3-4 minutes until fragrant. Season with salt and pepper. Add chicken sausage, turmeric, rosemary, thyme, and oregano; sauté another 2 minutes. Add tomatoes, lentils and chicken broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 45 minutes to an hour, until lentils are soft. Add more broth if you like a thinner soup.

Many times I have left out the chicken sausage and it’s just as good. The wonderful thing about this recipe is that you can add or remove things that you don’t like and it’s awesome reheated.
