Conference Call On March 11, 2020, APT held a Credentialing Q&A Conference Call. Based on the positive feedback we received, we will be scheduling additional Credentialing Q&A calls. Read PlayToday for future dates and times.


Integration of Instruction, Experience, and Supervision APT understands that each applicant’s process in meeting the credentialing requirements may not align precisely with the phase approach of the revised standards. However, all applicants must still demonstrate well-rounded education in play therapy and an integrated approach in the attainment of play therapy instruction, experience, and supervision, as this is a longstanding requirement.


Supervisors If you serve as a supervisor to someone working toward their play therapy credential, you play a critical role in guiding the supervisee’s progress through the phases. In each phase, the supervisor is asked to attest to their supervisee having achieved the outlined play therapy competencies, as well as having met the hours of instruction, experience, supervision, and observations suggested in each phase. APT asks supervisors to review all documentation prior to signing the forms. APT may contact the applicant and/or the supervisor if any questions arise.


Contact and Non-Contact Hours                     that the bulk of play therapy education should be experienced in a live, in-person format that allows for face-to-face experiential exercises, group discussion, Q&A, and healthy debate. This is not achieved when play therapy instruction is obtained entirely through online educational portals. Under the new credentialing guidelines, live online instruction counts as non-contact hours.

CE Renewal Hours APT credentials are renewed annually. However, continuing education is due every three years. • For individuals who received their RPT/S approval PRIOR to January 1, 2020, with continuing education due in 2020, 2021, or 2022, APT requires 18 clock hours of play therapy continuing education every 3 years. Beginning January 1, 2023, APT will require 24 hours of play therapy continuing education every 3 years.


• For individuals who received their RPT/S approval on January 1, 2020 or after, with continuing education due in 2023 or after, APT requires 24 clock hours of play therapy continuing education every 3 years.
