Carla Sharp’s The Build-A-House Technique is guidebook that an details a structured, child-friendly play
instructional approach
and assesses family interactions in one session. Thus, she offers clinicians a relatively quick method of gathering information needed for family treatment planning and intervention. The author describes how she developed the technique, in which family members build a house together with blocks, and she details the needed materials and instructions, use of the session recording form, and assessment of examples for coding the items is a strength of the guidebook. The author shares illustrative case examples that guide the reader in interpreting and scoring family dynamics.
Although the author gives the reader a solid overview of what the technique entails, it may be helpful for clinicians inexperienced in using the method to seek supervision or consultation on some points to ethically practice this technique. Notably, play therapists can inquire about step-by-step information on setting up the play space
encounter using the technique with families, and discuss possible solutions to those issues. The book has an informal, easy-to-read style, notwithstanding a few editing mistakes found within. Colored photographs of the houses, rather than black and white photographs, would have enhanced the reader’s experience with the book’s content.
