ATSU, UMKC Students Attend ASDA Annual Session F
ollowing are reports from students who attended the 2018 American Stu- dent Dental Association annual session in Anaheim, Calif. Annual Session is the official gathering of the ASDA House of Delegates. Each year the MDA provides reimbursement to offset the cost of sending one ASDA representative.
BY EKTA PATEL, ATSU 2019 This year, the MOSDOH-ASDA council sent four members to the ASDA Annual Session. In this meeting, the House votes on issues pertinent to the association in order to create new policies or build upon existing ones and to elect its leaders for the upcoming year.
Some of these policies include provisions to promote collaboration of dentists and physicians to improve oral and overall health; provisions to address barriers to care by encouraging outreach to underserved populations; the ability to accept nomi- nations from the floor, rather than write-in candidates for the Executive Com- mittee or Speaker of the House; the promotion of evidence based prescribing to help combat the opioid epidemic in our nation, and more. There also was a great amount of discussion regarding mid-level providers and their role in dentistry.
In addition to the election of the executive committee, each respective district voted for a District Trustee. This year, as our chapter president, I ran for the posi- tion for District 8. However, Brandon Rensch (Creighton) was chosen to serve as our representative on the Board of Trustees for the upcoming year. Overall, ASDA Annual Session was able to make a large impact on each of the individuals present. The theme for the week was “Lights, Camera, ASDA!” It was very appar-

BY MICHAEL GULLEY, UMKC 2019
My visit to the 2018 ASDA Annual Session was an awesome experience! The network- ing opportunities were fantastic. It was great seeing some familiar faces from our previous district events and being able to reconnect with them. There are so many opportuni- ties to learn and grow as a dental student. With breakout sessions focusing on different aspects of dentistry, chapter development, and landing your “dream” job, everyone can discover invaluable information at An- nual Session. I particularly enjoyed a session titled “Not Your Grandaddy’s Orthodontics” sponsored by the American Academy of Orthodontists, where I learned new advances and applications pertaining to orthodontics. Overall, the experience was very enlightening and I am thankful I was granted the opportu- nity to attend. f
