When a ship on the water is leaning and in danger of capsizing, there is a precise adjustment that needs to be made in order to return the ship to its upright position. In naval vernacular, this corrective adjustment is referred to as the “righting moment.” A basic definition of the “righting moment” according to www.encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com is “the torque which tends to restore a vessel heeled over to its upright position; it is the product of the righting arm and the weight of the vessel.”
