Build California is intent on shaping positive perceptions of the construction industry, informing young people and their influencers about the real career opportunities in

The Need As AGC of California Vice


President Erin Volk and AGC of California Construction Education Foundation Chair George Bradshaw outline in their message on page 6, the “why” behind the creation of Build California is backed up by myriad statistics pointing to the need for more skilled workers in construction. According to AGC of America’s


2018 Workforce Survey results (August 29, 2018), construction contributed $101.5 billion, or 3.6 percent, of California’s GDP of $2.8 trillion in 2018, while construction employment in the state totaled 868,900 in March 2019, growing 2.9 percent from the previous year. California ranked 21 out of 51 for employment growth. Over 75 percent of AGC-CA respondents to the survey reported “having a hard time filling some or all salaried and hourly craft positions.” (For more industry statistics and sources, go to buildcalifornia.com.)
