EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Building California’s Construction Workforce I

By George Bradshaw, AGC CEF Chair

am very proud of all of the accom- plishments that the AGC of California Construction Education

Foundation (AGC CEF) made in 2017, and I am excited for all we have planned in 2018. More now than ever before, we have executed on our AGC CEF mission: to establish construction as a viable career option and to promote the development of construction careers.

Inspiring Students to Consider Construction

By now you are well aware of our

workforce statistics and how they impact our construction businesses and industry at large – painfully so. Te increased need for workers skilled in the trades has resulted in a greater need to recruit young people into vocational and trade education, and AGC CEF knew we had to go beyond the “one and done” approach we’d been imple- menting through our Construction Career Awareness Day program. While the events were successful in reaching a mass number of students in specific areas of California, we lacked the ability to follow up or follow through on the interest that was generated at the events. We needed a comprehensive, consistent construction career development program that would rebrand and reimage our careers for California’s youth. With that in mind, in May 2017,

AGC CEF introduced our new construction career development program, Go Build California. Go Build California is a robust image enhancement and marketing campaign that engages and interacts with young people and their “influencers” on

social media, television, at career fairs and other events and in their classrooms to highlight the multitude of oppor- tunities that exist in the construction industry. In the first quarter

of 2018, you’ll see the launch of our new Go Build California website and the distribution of Go Build “Educator Toolkits” to schools across the state. Te AGC CEF Board of Directors

and staff are very excited about the direction Go Build CA is taking and look forward to reporting measurable impacts in years to come.

Supporting Our Future Workforce

AGC CEF continues to award

scholarships to a number of deserving students and individuals pursuing education/training leading to construction careers and also to local high schools, universities and other community programs that support the development of construction careers. In 2017, we awarded over $65,000 in

success and future impact in the field.

You Can Help As most of you know the AGC

CEF and Go Build CA is 100 percent funded through charitable donations and grant funds. I would like to thank our current partners, ehs Inc. and Procore.org, and all those companies and individuals who have stepped up to support the AGC CEF by sponsoring our events and/or donating on an annual basis. On behalf of the AGC CEF Board

of Directors and staff, we would like to extend our sincere appreciation to those individuals and companies that continue to donate their time, resources and financial support! Without your support, we wouldn’t be able to continue to support AGC Student Chapters, our construction career development programs like Go Build California, or scholarships. I encourage you to make contact with any of the Board of Directors or staff, become familiar with our mission and consider supporting the future generation of our construction industry. scholarships throughout the state. For this issue of California Constructor magazine, we caught up with two of our former scholarship recipients to see what they are up to now and as part of measuring the impact and success of CEF’s scholarship program. Be sure to check that article; I think you’ll find AGC CEF is helping to remove educa- tional and financial barriers for many and ensuring their
