A Bright Future and New Leadership in 2018 A

s we kick off the New Year,

I would like to start by welcoming our new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Peter Tateishi. With his background in construction

membership and government affairs, Peter brings both strong experience and a fresh perspective to the position. We look forward to having him on our team to help guide AGC of California into the future! I would also like to welcome our

new slate of officers for 2018: Jerome Di Padova as Senior Vice President, Mike Blach as Vice President, and Dina Kimble as Treasurer. Together with our CEO, Executive Committee and the strong AGC staff, we have a great team in place for a productive and fun year ahead. In addition, I would like to offer a

special “thank you” to outgoing President Mike Mencarini for his leadership in 2017. Leading our efforts on industry issues, in addition to the CEO search and transition, was a heavy lift — and Mike proved to be the right person for the job. In connection to this, I would like to thank Tom Holsman for his great contribution to the industry and to the association in his 32 years with AGC. We will have a party to celebrate Tom and all he has done for AGC in March; please watch for the notice and plan to attend. When I first got involved with AGC

some 25 years ago, I was young, aggressive and a little naïve. I can remember my boss, Ken Walters, explaining why he believed AGC was so important and why we were members. Now after 29 years in the business, having experienced many ups and downs, it has become clear to me the value and importance of AGC and the role it has played in shaping our industry. In 2018, one of our key goals revolves

around membership engagement. Tis includes growing with new members and increasing the involvement of existing

members. I encourage current members to become more involved. Attend a new event, bring a young employee or potential member to an AGC event, or join one of our many committees. As a member-driven association, our future and strength are directly tied to member participation. Workforce development will also

continue to be a key goal in 2018. Currently the average age of a skilled worker is 50 years old, and for every five tradesmen who leave the industry, only one replaces them. Te AGC Construction Education Foundation (CEF) is working to address this need on many fronts. AGC’s coordinated effort with our student chapters has gained momentum and changed the dynamics at our statewide events. Te Construction Leadership Council, the next step for young profes- sionals to get involved in AGC, is also growing. Te next big push is the Go Build California Initiative. Take a look through this issue of California Constructor for the latest details on Go Build and all of AGC’s diverse workforce development efforts. Finally, I would like to briefly address

a recent disaster that impacted many in California. In October 2017, Northern California experienced what have been called the most destructive wildfires in California history, killing 43 people and destroying an estimated 8,900 buildings and homes. As of press time (in early December) fires were taking a devas- tating toll in Southern California as well. Te construction effort needed to rebuild these communities will be immense and challenging for all who have suffered severe losses. Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers as they work through the rebuilding process. In closing, let me say what a privilege

and honor it is to serve as your 2018 President and how excited I am to represent AGC of California in the upcoming year. I look forward to seeing you at the Meetings and Officers Instal- lation banquet on January 25-26 at the Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa! Walt Johnson 2018 President, AGC of California
