representative and senator is essential in our advocacy efforts. Despite your feelings about politics, the men and women representing us are just like you and me — they live in our communities, attend our churches, shop in our grocery stores, have children or grandchildren in our schools. However, many don’t realize the intricacies of our industry. From a legislator’s viewpoint, what may seem like a reasonable solution to a problem doesn’t take into consideration the complexities that negatively affect our customers. It’s up to us to proactively educate lawmakers about our industry so they can understand our position. Tat’s why these relationships are so important.

Our “traditional” ways to share our message with legislators will need to change in 2021. Like everything else, the COVID-19 pandemic altered our interactions with state legislators. Visitors may not be allowed in the Missouri Capitol during session. What does that

mean for MBA’s Target Banker visits? Currently, MBA staff is assessing the program for the upcoming legislative session. It could be virtual visits — dedicated one-on-one time with lawmakers to hear their views on measures and to share MBA’s position on specific issues. A virtual visit would allow more bankers to participate in these discussions, giving your staff an opportunity to engage with MBA’s grassroots efforts. And, these virtual visits would enhance traditional methods — small in-person meetings, phone calls and emails. Perhaps you will follow your legislators on social media and interact with them on Twitter, Facebook or another platform. However you participate, just know that your individual interactions amplify our industry’s voice.

I hope making a commitment to be more involved with MBA’s advocacy efforts is a goal you set for 2021. When thinking of the goals you wish to pursue in the coming

year, whether professional or personal, consider this — how will your goal make a difference for others? I truly believe each of us is here on this Earth to make a difference in a person’s life and our communities. As bankers, 2020 taught us to be creative in our business transactions and relationships — we had to explore new ways to provide financial services to our customers. We discovered new avenues that went above and beyond our customers’ expectations, and these changes made a significant difference for our customers. Te same is true for our communities — when our neighbors needed us the most in these trying times, we were there to offer help and resources. Our simple acts truly did MAKE A DIFFERENCE in another’s life.

For 2021, let’s continue to find ways to truly MAKE A DIFFERENCE and make each day a GREAT ONE … because it’s the only kind to have!
