CHAPTER CONNECTIONS


As the Virtual NPM Convention approached, a group of chapter directors decided to connect with each other and bring their chapters to the Convention. Here are some of their reflections and ideas for keeping their chapter members engaged during this strange and isolated time.


Gathering the Chapter Captains


At the end of May, I was suddenly struck with the realization that little had been done to promote the virtual convention to our local Louisville Chapter. As co-director and convention core member, I wasn’t really sure how to remedy this. It was then that Steve Petrunak invited all Chapter Directors to a Zoom call to discuss the upcoming convention, see how they were feeling and offer help.


Tose that joined our first call were from New York to California and represented very diverse chapters. We uncovered some anxiety over how the virtual convention would be conducted, how the pricing was to work, and general sadness over the pandemic, but we appreciated the chance to talk and share ideas.


Te group of ten decided to meet bi-monthly on Zoom, creating constructive tools that would help us tell the convention story to our local chapters. We started by focusing on concrete subjects like pricing (that resulted in the creation of a cracker- jack flyer); we shared PowerPoint slides and tips

on running Zoom meetings with our chapters, and we exchanged chapter correspondence. We felt so confident heading into convention week, we ran a contest to see which of us could bring in the most new convention registrations.


We found each other in a difficult time and made the choice to help. Te convention was only the start. And we plan to continue.

Te state of the coronavirus in our country has created many challenges for ministers of music and by extension, NPM and NPM chapters. Event planning and schedules have been rendered useless as live gatherings have become impossible. NPM Chapters around the country are now working to create virtual and safe gatherings for their local chapters. An opportunity for such gatherings comes with NPM National giving chapters the opportunity to use convention content at no charge for chapter-
