CONVENTION 2020
MEGA BREAKOUTS
For our daily “MEGA Breakout” presentations, 6 gifted speakers took an hour to focus the lens of our baptismal and sacramental call on their own area of ministry and passion, followed by a spirited live question and answer session with attendees.
Building the Pastoral Musician of the Future: Helping our Next Generation Answer the Baptismal Call
Steven R. Janco
Preparing for the MEGA-breakout, “Building the Pastoral Musician of the Future” was a challenge, as so much about parish worship seems uncertain at this point. Yet in spite of any uncertainty, I remain convinced that the formation of effective liturgical musicians must be practice-focused, well-rounded, and assembly-centered. Pastoral musicians must be grounded in principles and foundational skills, but we must also be fluent in pastoral flexibility and purposeful creativity if we are to serve worshiping communities with competence, joy, and compassion in “normal” times and during challenging times.
One thing that continues to excite and motivate me as an educator is that there is much yet to learn about
music that can help us deepen our understanding of the “ministerial role(s)” of music in liturgical celebration. Music always operates on many levels simultaneously, whether we’re aware of it or not: it has the power to suggest a mood, to evoke emotional response, or to foster group cohesiveness; it can also express, acclaim, proclaim, teach, interpret, affirm, exhort, comfort, inspire, evoke memories, make connections. Te more we understand how music affects and influences individuals and groups, the more effective we can be in making repertory choices and shaping a liturgical music practice that prepares and inspires disciples for their mission in the world!
One last personal thought: I’m someone who tends to move around quite a bit during workshops and breakouts, so it was a bit challenging to sit still in a chair and consciously try to keep hand gestures within camera view! It required some practice. One thing that helped: I taped a photo of my larger family onto the cabinet across from my desk. Tey weren’t able to nod at appropriate times, but they smiled back helpfully throughout the session!
