Kathleen LaTorre

Recipient of the NPM Members Scholarship

Kathleen LaTorre, from Lancaster,

Ohio, is currently a sophomore Sacred Music Major with a concentration in Organ Performance at Seton Hill University. When she is home in Ohio, Kathleen is often found on the organ bench at the parishes of St. Mary of the Assumption, St. Mark, and St. Bernadette (where her mother is director of music). When she is at school, she ministers to the Seton Hill University community as an organist and cantor at campus Masses. She has perfect pitch, which she finds useful for all kinds of situations from last-minute filling in as a cantor to being able to more easily learn and hold onto Gregorian chant and a cappella singing in general.

Kathleen came to NPM through her mother, who helped to get her involved as a senior in high school. As both a dedicated musician and a devout Catholic, pastoral music ministry is a natural fit for her; as she says, it “allows me to combine my two passions and be of service to others.”

John J. Mitchell

Recipient of the OCP Scholarship

John Joseph “JJ” Mitchell is an organist from Arlington, VA.

Tis autumn, he begins his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Organ Performance at the University of Houston and serves as Organ Scholar at both Christ Church Cathedral and St. Philip Presbyterian Church. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from Westminster Choir College, his Master of

Sacred Music degree from the University of Notre Dame, and he has studied at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Toulouse, France.

Seven years ago, while working for Dr. Rick Gibala at the Cathedral of St. Tomas More, at Rick’s suggestion, JJ became a member of NPM. He is grateful to NPM for providing him scholarship opportunities over the years, and he believes in the mission of John Finley Williamson to train young students to become great music ministers. Whether times are easygoing or tumultuous— there is always healing, joy, forgiveness, welcome, and thanksgiving to be shared as a community through music, and especially during liturgy. When he is not at the organ, JJ enjoys cooking, board gaming, exercising, and speaking French.

Brett Pardue

Recipient of the GIA Pastoral Musicians Scholarship

Brett Pardue grew up on a

farm in North Carolina (where one of his first vocal accomplishments was perfecting the “cow call”) and his musical journeys have taken him up and down the east coast ever since.

Especially recently, Brett’s life has gone through many changes: mid-pandemic, he found himself transitioning from a very high-church, liturgy- driven worship setting to a Baptist congregation in a rural community just outside of Raleigh, NC. But he has found a loving home with his new community, about whom he says, “the love and support of this congregation is palpable. Teir desire was to hire a pastoral musician who could build a music program with integrity, and I look forward to doing just that for the glory of God!” He looks forward to continuing his studies and pursuing his vocation as a full time minister of music.
