installed as their pastor on August 7, 1830 . The two churches are twenty-five miles apart. He served- both for a period of seven years. The Due West church grew, and he remained as their pastor for 30 years. The idea of a high school for the denomination had gained popularity. The

concept was to prepare young men for college, and for the ministry. Ebenezer Pressly was instrumental in sponsoring the project. By 1839, he was in charge; by the next year two oth- er professors joined him. And that was the beginning of Erskine College. Ebenezer Pressly continued his work as pastor of the Due West Church, while also serving as Seminary Professor and President of the College. By 1846, his health was breaking. The Synod reluctantly accepted his resignation, but

asked him to serve until a replacement was named. He stayed until 1848, when Dr. R. C. Grier came to Erskine. After a two-year period when he continued to serve as pastor of the Due West church, he accepted the position as President of the “Anderson Female Collegiate Institute” in nearby Anderson, SC. He did so with the understanding that he would remain as pastor of the Due West Church. Early in his ministry, Ebenezer Erskine had married Elizabeth Agnew of Due West. Four-

teen children were born to them. Only 3 daughters and one son lived to be adults. Elizabeth died in 1853. The next year, he married Mary A. Taylor from Laurens, SC. Two children were born to them, but both died in infancy. On August 21, 1860 Dr. Ebenezer E. Pressly died from injuries he received when thrown

from a buggy. He was only 52 years old. As a minister and educator, he had helped to shape the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, not only for his lifetime, but for its future. His one surviving son also became a minister in the church, and eventually served as President of the Seminary. When one reads the history of the denomination, the names of Ebenezer Erskine Pressly’s grand-children, and great-grand children appear frequently as pastors, educators, and members of the church’s boards and agencies. In his biography in the Centennial History 1905, there is no mention of a secretary, nor an administrative assistant. Obviously he never sent a text message, nor checked Facebook for information. It’s difficult for us to realize his work load, as a pastor, seminary professor, and college President all at the same time. Few people of our time can relate to one man losing thirteen children, as well as his first wife. And yet he remained a faithful pastor, and servant of the Lord. His story is one of how God honors His covenant promises. Psalm 100:5 - “For the Lord is good, His lovingkindness is everlasting, and His faithfulness to all generations.”?
