What Does A Disciple Of Jesus Look Like?

By Meredith Cavin “

(John 15:8) “If you keep My commandments

you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s command- ments and abide in His love.” John 15:10) “You are My friends if you do whatever I command.” (John 15: 14) Indeed, what does a disciple of

Jesus look like? Well, simply put, the disciple of Jesus looks amazingly like you and me. Is there a special school we must go and learn from? Yes, it is the school of Jesus. All of His teachings and commands are the core curriculum. And remember, Jesus tells us that His commands are not burdensome. We cannot choose to do this or keep that, leaving out that which may seem too hard, or that which we don’t like. And when we speak of keeping

His commands, it has nothing to do with trying to gain favor with God letting Him see how good we are. No, it is because we have such a desire to please Him, love Him, to know Him and to delight in Him. By definition a disciple is one who

follows, one who receives instruction, or adheres to a school of thought. We, as Christians, follow after Jesus just as those first disciples did, who consist- ed of all sorts of people. These men and women constantly were growing and learning. Sometimes the disciple making process was painful and the lessons were hard taught. But, fol- lowing Jesus and keeping His com- mands, brought peace and freedom to those early disciples as it does for us today. We are free to be gracious, loving and forgiving people, even with the most difficult of individuals

y this My Father is glorified, that you shall bear much fruit, so you shall be My disciples.”

and situations. As modern-day disciples of Jesus we are to be involved in the ‘bearing of much fruit’. This means our private and public lives point to the good news of the gospel of Christ Jesus. Not only are we to bear witness and testimony of Christ Jesus through our

lives, but we are called to disciple those whom our Lord has placed in our paths. We have the unique opportunity with those who are new in the faith, as well as not so new, to help bring them along the path of maturity. You Christian moth- ers, aunts and grandmothers have the opportunities to disciple those whom God has blessed you with. You, along with our community of faith, are truly blessed to have these opportunities to minister to these young ones. Being a disciple of Jesus means we are not in this walk by ourselves or our

own strength. First, we have the blessed Holy Spirit indwelling each of as Chris- tians. He is at work bearing witness to us who Jesus is, leading and guiding us, and equipping for the work of the ministry. Secondly, in our Christian walk we have had and have men and women who have taught us and lived before us this Christian life. We should be so grateful for all those Sunday School teach- ers, youth workers and pastors who spent hours teaching .us, pouring them- selves into our lives. But, key to any work of discipleship is our abiding in Jesus and He in us.

There is a standard which goes beyond our or any humanly conceived idea, and that is His word. Jesus tells us; “If you keep My commandments you will abide in My love.” (Matt. 15:10) We will be enabled to see it as joy to keep all that He commanded us, even to the end. Do not be satisfied with where you are presently. If you do apathy will set in

and atrophy will take place in our spiritual endeavors. We will lose our focus on the Lord Jesus and lose the desire to please Him and accomplish what our Lord has commanded us. The end result of being a disciple is to, “Go and make disciples.” (Matt. 28:20a) Praise the Lord, He will equip us for this great task! Go forward and press on church of the living Lord!? Rev. Meredith Cavin is a Retired Minister in the Mississippi Valley Presbytery.
