Ebenezer Erskine Pressly (1808 - 1860)

“Father” of Erskine College. Ebenezer Erskine Pressly was born December 23, 1808. His father was William

Pressly, an elder in the Cedar Springs church, “a man of strong mind, well cultivated, and with a heart devoted to the cause of Christ.” His mother was Elizabeth Hearst Pressly. Both parents were noted for their intelligence and piety. The father died when Ebenezer was an infant. one of Ebenezer’s uncles! William Hearst,


helped to provide for the young child’s education. At the age of 16, Ebenezer, along with his cousin James P. Pressly went to Lexington, Kentucky, to enroll at Transylvania Col- lege. Upon finding that Dr. Bishop, one of the renown professors, was leaving to become President of Miami (Ohio) University, the Pressly cousins went with him. Two years later, in 1826 Ebenezer graduated at the age of 18. He then returned south, and studied theology privately under Rev. John T. Pressly. Ebenezer Pressly was licensed to preach at Due West, S.C. on February 21, 1829. He


spent some time preaching in the immediate area of Abbeville, Anderson and Laurens. And then he made the customary “missionary tour,” preaching in Georgia, Florida and Alabama. He received a call from the two churches of Generostee and Due West, and was
