News In Brief
Elder Emeritus David Sides
By Rev. Tim Watson Sunday July 18, the congregation of the New Sterling Church unani-
mously elected long-time elder and teacher David W. Sides to the office of Elder Emeritus. David has served the Church in many capacities for over 60 years. He has been known as the Patriarch of New Sterling for many of those years. He has served with great humility, dignity and love for his Lord and his church, his presbytery and his denomination. During a session meeting on Dec 30, 1963, David was approved by the
session to be nominated for elder. He was then elected to that office by the congregation in early 1964. He was then ordained into the office of ruling el- der later that year. That same congregational meeting in 1964 was the same day that the Rev. Robert ‘Bob’ Robinson was called to be the pastor at New Sterling. An incredible day in the 234-year history of New Sterling. Rev. Robinson was able to join us for the celebration as well as Dr. Earl Linder- man, the most recent past pastor of New Sterling. David also began teaching Sunday School in 1959 (the year I was born)
which was recognized during this time as well. A very special treat was that several of those who were in that first SS Class were in attendance for the celebration. It was a great day of acknowledgement and celebration for everyone.
Thinking About
Labor Day The Bible affirms the impor-
tance of work. Adam was put in the garden “to till and keep it.: In the fourth commandment we are told to, “remember the sabbath day and keep it holy.” Then we read: “Six days you shall labor and do all your work” (Exodus 20:8-9 NRSV). Work is important for us. It al-
lows us to use our talents, our minds, and our strength to create and bring forth the “fruits” of our labor. Work satisfies an inner need to make a positive contribution to the world. Work helps to bring sat- isfaction and fulfillment to us as we use our lives for good and uplifting purposes. It is a way of exercising good stewardship of the personal gifts God has given to us: our brain power, our physical strength, our special talents. Since we have the privilege of

being “works together with God” it seems fitting that we set aside one day a year to think about the good- ness and dignity of work. Therefore, let us joyfully celebrate Labor Day. (From Boyce Memorial ARP Church, Kings Mountain, NC.)
