every reason for concluding that the labors of Mr. Boyse were great- ly blessed…” Lathan illustrated service at the Hopewell Church in May, 1791. Rev. James Rogers, pas- tor of the Ebenezer, Kings Creek, and Cannons Creek churches in South Carolina assisted Rev. Boyse. On that occasion “a great many people were connected with the church.” In those times, church membership was taken very seri- ously. It took two days to examine the many people who wished to join the church. When Rev. Boyse was in the Hopewell community, he stayed at the home of Mr. David McQuiston. He became engaged to Margaret, one of Mr. McQuiston’s daughters. The Centennial History states that order and his pulpit exercises were very acceptable and fruitful.” (p. 73). For the last year of his life, he suffered from “consumption” (tu- and her family cared for him. He died on March 18, 1793. Soon af- ill and died. Both are buried in the cemetery of the Hopewell Church. Lathan noted that when Rev. Boyse died, that he left only James Rogers as an installed pastor in the Associate Reformed Synod of the South.
