Bonclarken Leaving a Legacy
CHIP SHERER President
irginia Heinz-Stanley was a wonderful friend of Bonclar- ken in many, many ways. Vir- ginia passed away on May 12 at the age of 100. This month, I want to share with you the legacy she left with us. The photo on this page was taken in July 2005 at the dedication of Ja- neen’s Cottage. Virginia and Bob Heinz are joined by Stuart and Eel Weir. Virginia and Bob had moved to Hendersonville from Colorado in 2003 and joined Pinecrest ARP Church. The Weirs befriended them and introduced them to Bonclarken, for which we will be forever grate- ful. So began a relationship between
V
Virginia and Bonclarken which has meant so much to us. Virginia and Bob’s only daughter Janeen had passed away in 2002, and they were looking for a way to honor her memory. Bonclarken President Jim Brice, along with Stuart and Eel Weir, worked with them and they provided a gift to renovate Terrace Apartments into Janeen’s Cottage for youth, which opened in 2005. Since then, Janeen’s Cottage has provided housing for thousands and thou- sands of youth during their visits to Bonclarken and remains today as a vital part of our youth facilities. In 2005, Virginia and Bob gave a stock gift to establish a Charitable Gift Annuity, the proceeds of which were to be split between Bonclarken and Erskine. In 2008, when we were rais- ing funds to build The Young Lodge, they gave a wonderful gift to name two of the guest rooms. With “Trust and Obey” being one of Virginia’s
favorite hymns, they named one room “Trust” and the other “Obey”! Bob passed away in 2009. In 2017,
Virginia (at age 93) remarried! She and Col. Bill Stanley USAF (Ret.) be- came a wonderful couple and trav- eled extensively. Bill and Pinecrest Church hosted a 100th birthday for her last August, and she was remark- able that day.
During all these years, Virginia was consistent with me as to why she sup- ported Bonclarken. “I want young people to hear about Jesus,” was her most common line. She would often ask me how the retreats and confer- ences were going and share that she was praying for our guests and me. Her passing on May 12 saddened us all. How blest we are with the legacy Virginia Heinz-Stanley has left on our hearts and on Bonclarken. She will be missed.
