IT IS PROBABLY FAIR TO SAY THAT EVERY BOARD OF DIRECTORS RELIES ON COMMITTEES TO HELP THEM DEAL WITH ROUTINE MATTERS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS. MOST OF US RELY ON STANDING COMMITTEES TO ASSIST WITH RECURRING ISSUES AND AD HOC COMMITTEES TO TACKLE SHORT TERM SINGLE POINT SITUATIONS THAT TEND TO BE FAIRLY ROUTINE. COMMITTEES OFFER ADVICE AND RECOMMENDATIONS. THEY ARE IMPORTANT PLANNING TOOLS. BUT WHEN THINGS BEGIN TO GET SERIOUS AND THE COMPLEXITIES OF THE CHALLENGE COMPOUND THEMSELVES, THE COMMITTEE APPROACH CAN OFTEN MISS THE MARK.
