Length of Training for Paid Summer Staff (n=168)
Staffing Level in Summer 2022 The Staffing Crisis in Context
The chart (left) puts the 2022 staffing crisis in stark relief. Only a quarter of CCCA camps were fully staffed, while 20% were critically understaffed.
At the time of the Compass Survey in spring 2023, about a third of respondents reported that they had a least 90% of the staff they needed for the summer, indicating much better hiring success than 2022. However, over a third (36%) had less than three-quarters of their staff positions filled at the time of the survey. There was some optimism, with just under half (45%) indicating that they had more staff hired than the same time the previous year. However, 40% indicated that they were in about the same place in 2022, and 15% concerningly said thay had fewer staff hired.
