KVMA Animal Hall of Fame A Hand, M’ Lady? by Dr. Kristan Hodges, Editor
As often stated, heroes come in many sizes and help us mere mortals in many ways. Te 2017 KVMA Animal Hall of Fame inductee proves that
they might also be found in the most unexpected of places.
Kathy Mae Miller of Louisville, KY had a special need, one only a very special service animal could possibly be of assistance with. You see, Kathy Mae had a balance problem. Tus, a well-trained but too-short dog would simply not do. Ten one day, while visiting a local animal shelter, she found Gabby, an approximately two-year-old Great Dane! What providence! With love, consis- tency and steady training, Gabby became a certified service dog. Gabby is the consummate professional, traveling everywhere with Kathy Mae. She assists her with shopping, travel, and even social events. Earlier this year Kathy Mae was on a shopping trip to Santa’s Cottage in Indiana accompanied, of course, by Gabby. During a break, while Gabby was off-leash seeing to na-
ture’s necessary call, Kathy Mae started to turn around and, in doing so, suddenly felt quite dizzy. Losing her balance, she began to fall, the result of which could have been devastating. Suddenly, there was Gabby, breaking her fall. Instead of a terrible fall, she had a minor stumble and could dust herself off to continue her day. “I know I would have broken something if I’d have fallen”, Kathy Mae said. “Gabby saved my life!”
Still as regal and dedicated as she was the first day she came to be Kathy Mae’s loyal companion, Gabby, now at 14 years of age, is nearing retirement. She’s continues to be willing to offer that balancing support for Kathy Mae, but her veterinarian, Dr. Karen Lanz of Louisville, sees that it’s time for her to rest. But now, as she slumbers, she will wear the beautiful new collar stating that she is the 2017 inductee into the KVMA Animal Hall of Fame.
