President’s Message Dear Fellow KVMA Members,
Te last year has been a wild ride politically, economically, and socially for the United States but as for the KVMA we are steadily moving forward. With only the short legislative session in 2017 we saw little activity that greatly affected our membership, but in 2018 Kentucky has the full term legislative session. Te KVMA plans on addressing a few items during the session but, as always, we do not know what others may have planned that could affect us. Te legislative committee and our lobbyist, Judy Taylor, are already watching and ready to act should we need to on behalf of the KVMA.
One thing on my agenda this year is to attempt to increase member participation in the organization. Dr. Jennifer Quammen is in the process of starting a student mentor program and I would like to encourage you to share your hard-earned knowledge with the newest members of our profession by signing up as a mentor. Look for details in your yearly dues mailer or call the KVMA office if you need more information. Also if you would be willing to serve on the finance, membership, public relations, Mid-America Veterinary Conference, or legislative committees please let Louise know by calling or emailing the KVMA office. It is your KVMA and we value your input.
A timely topic this year, unfortunately, is the opioid crisis that Kentucky and other states are experiencing. While we would like to believe that veterinary medicine has little to do with this, the statistics show that veterinarians are being targeted as a source where addicts can get narcotics and then divert them for their own use. Dr. Frank Vice, a licensed vet and registered pharmacist and KVMA member, is going to address some of steps we need to implement to keep us in compliance with the DEA. And Dr. Alice Mills is working with several practitioners to develop a webinar that will address ways to make sure we are in compliance and not targeted by drug seekers.
Te KVMA board met at Lake Cumberland last weekend for our fall retreat and we have many exciting things planned for 2018. We are always open for suggestions from our members so please feel that you can reach out to us at any time.
Sincerely,
Doug Peterson, D.V.M KVMA President
