Veterinary News From the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association

KVMA MISSION: TO PROMOTE, IMPROVE, AND ADVOCATE FOR THE VETERINARY PROFESSION. “Thank You” for Jobs Well Done

As we look around the Commonwealth of Kentucky and, in particular, through-

out the membership of the KVMA, we can be proud of the quality of the veter- inary professionals we see. However, each year we recognize members who have in some way, or maybe in many ways, stood out from the crowd as special. We recog- nize those veterinarians as our Veterinari- an of the Year and with the Distinguished Service Award.

Harking from her family’s farm in Mc- Clean County, KY, Dr. Debbie Reed received her Bachelor of Science in Ag- riculture in 1981 and her Masters in Ag- riculture in 1985 from Western Kentucky University. She then was awarded her DVM from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1987. In 2010 she finished her Masters of Public Health from WKU. In 1988 she established a solo modern mixed animal practice with advanced technologies in small animal surgery and haul-in facilities for livestock and horses.

Dr. Debbie Reed receives the Kentucky Veterinarian of the Year Award by Dr. Walter G. Haines, ABVP.

In 2006, she became the case coordinator and lecturer for the Breathitt Vet Center and the Murray State Animal Health Technology Program. During this time, she served on 13 state and regional committees for the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Associa- tion, the Kentucky Farm Bureau and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. She has completed 13 different state and national training certificates focusing on For- eign Animal Disease Surveillance, Biosecurity Issues and Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases.

In 2015, she assumed the duties of Director of the Breathitt Vet Center. For the past two years, she has overseen the construction of the new 36.5 million-dollar Breathitt Vet Center, which is a 77,000 square foot ultra-modern diagnostic laboratory, the newest of its kind in North America.

Te 2017 KVMA Veterinarian of the Year, Dr. Debbie Reed, recently described how her time in practice influenced her work at the diagnostic center. “I have extensive skills in working with few resources and little outside assistance.” She continued, “I have learned to communicate with a wide range of individuals, and make myself understood to all.”

Dr. Bill Rood graduated from the University of California-Davis College of Vet- erinary Medicine in 1972. Not satisfied, he pursued another advanced degree and graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1975. He started
