Kenyan farmers inspect a field utilizing drip irrigation.

The plausible solution for this hindrance is the utilization of solar power.

to smallholder farmers in Kenya, while also offering training and consulting from agronomists.

Through affordable installation, products and training, Kenyan farmers are becoming more and more able to utilize the solar technology on their farms, resulting in water savings and increased yields. This technology comes as a huge reprieve for farmers who are not able to rely on the rain.

Irrigation in Kenya is being used as a means to enhance farming and boost agricultural productivity in the country. Several methods are used by Kenyan farmers to practice irrigation, including surface and subsurface, sprinkler, and drip irrigation methods.

Solar power alternative

Kenya has 5,800 hectares of arable land. However, only 17 percent of that is suitable for rain-fed agriculture; the rest needs to be irrigated. Drip irrigation has proven to be a valuable option for many farmers in the region. Unfortunately, the off-grid farmers aren’t able to use the technology without expensive diesel generators. Alternatives such as petrol and manual systems are unfortunately constrained by high input costs and labor inefficiencies.

The plausible solution for this hindrance is the utilization of solar power. Efforts are being made to make solar-powered irrigation products and services affordable and available
