The Irrigation and Water Management Survey (formerly called the Farm and Ranch Irrigation Survey) is a part of the Census of Agriculture Program, which means it is conducted just once every five years.
WHY SHOULD I COMPLETE IT?
This survey provides the only comprehensive information on irrigation activities and water use across U.S. farms, ranches and horticultural operations. Through this survey, growers provide information on topics such as water sources and amount of water used, acres irrigated by type of system, irrigation and yield by crop, system investments and energy costs.
I JUST COMPLETED THE 2017 CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE. WHY DO I NEED TO COMPLETE THIS SURVEY?
While the 2017 Census of Agriculture included questions about irrigation, it did not go into detail. A survey specific to irrigation will allow NASS to publish more comprehensive information on this important practice.
HOW ARE THE DATA USED?
The data will aid efforts to develop and promote efficient irrigation practices and long-term sustainability of water resources (i.e., improved technologies, better programs, etc.).
Producers, farm organizations, businesses, journalists, researchers, policymakers (local, state and federal) and others use the data to
• evaluate the impact of irrigated crops by state. • compare water use by application method. • develop improved technologies. • develop federal programs. • appraise water use trends. • assess impact of congressional legislation.
HOW CAN I GET A COPY OF THE RESULTS?
Survey results will be available Nov. 13, 2019, online at
www.nass.usda.gov.
For more information about this survey, call toll-free (888) 4AG-STAT or visit NASS online at
