CORNELL AGRICULTURAL PUMPS BEST IN CLASS EFFICIENCY
Consider reusing your backflush water.
If you have clean water, the amount of backflush water may not seem like much of a nuisance or worth reusing. But if your water is dirty, the filters can backflush often, creating a lot of water to manage. There are two primary options to consider:
1. Prefilter the water to reduce the sediment load entering the primary filter.
2. Filter the backflush water and pump it back into the system upstream of your primary filters. If you are injecting fertilizers into your irrigation water, this is a best practice that saves you money because the backflush water can also often contain some of your fertilizer. An overflow screen with a booster pump to recycle the water is a good option. The cover photo on page 10 shows a “recycled system” used to filter the backflush water and reuse it.
Know what’s in your water.
Some water can be highly corrosive. There are different materials that are available depending on what is in your water. Just going with stainless steel is not always the best option. Have your water tested and talk to the manufacturer if you are unsure.
Consider installing a backup filter.
Backup filters are cheap insurance if the primary filters happen to break. The backup filter is installed downstream of the primary filters to prevent plugging the entire system, should the main filters fail.
