There is never a dullmoment for Valorie Jones | By Jack P. Hagler, ASTC LEADERS AT ALL LEVELS

In The Beginning Valorie Jones had been working on cruise ships for three years as a guest relations manager when she was recruited into the ship’s show-  while in college, but, “I never imagined it would become my career.” Valorie transitioned to become a production manager with Celebrity Cruises, which launched her performing arts management career.

What Valorie Does Valorie is currently associate director of production for Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Her position oversees the local crew program and artist services at both Walton Arts Center and Walmart - by Rogers. “Our local crew works both venues. I am primarily dedicated to the Walton Arts Center, but I love the en- ergy of the Walmart AMP when I have the opportunity to work there.” Valorie’s management style is to focus on industry trends that keep Walton Arts Center and Walmart AMP current in the areas of production and artist hospitality. “There’s never a dull moment, although I could do without the paperwork.”

How She Got Here Valorie was between ship contracts when she was introduced to Walton Arts Cen- ter. “I immediately knew I wanted to be part of the organization, so I joined the   sea adventure in 2010 when I received an email about a posting for assistant production manager. I applied, and I have been full-time ever  await me almost every day.”

Valorie’s Philosophy Valorie says she has a “get-to” job as opposed to a “have-to” job. “We   -  everyone is a customer.” When asked about dealing with co-workers, Valorie replied, “We’re all in this together! I try to acknowledge every- one’s contribution and let my co-workers know how much I appreciate them. We have to support each other. I would be nowhere without the support of my co-workers.”

Her Community Valorie strongly believes that Walton Arts Center impacts the commu- nity in many ways. “Walton Arts Center brings amazing programming to the region through events like Artosphere Arts and Nature Festival  

reduced cost. I am most proud of Walton Arts Center’s commitment to bringing arts education to the region and the 40,000 children who attend performances annually.”

Valorie and IAVM “The support community that we have in IAVM is unparalleled. I have a tremendous amount of personal support and a vast knowledge base to draw from. The members of IAVM really work together to help each other, be it a new operational process or a major industry change. Members contribute on a range of topics to develop best practices for the industry.” Valorie’s participation and membership in IAVM           conference, I was seriously considering leaving the industry, but when I found this group of fun and friendly profession- als who were happy to share their knowl- edge, they helped me to realize I was in the right place. The Balacing Act Valorie feels that the culture of venue management is changing. “The days of living a ‘lifestyle job’ in this industry are slowly beginning to give way to a positive work/life balance. The up-and-coming workforce demands this balance; and it is a requirement to retain them as employ-

ees. Venues must not simply support the idea; they should also foster it.” When challenged on her own work/life balance, Valorie said her     doing anything outdoors, especially in springtime in Arkansas.”

“I’m Glad I… …went to Venue Management School and Graduate Institute at Ogle- bay. Participating in these programs were high points of my career. I  Every day I draw on the knowledge of those three summers. The re- lationships that were built will last beyond my profession. Venue Man- agement School is a great foundation on which to grow your career.”

Valorie’s Words Of Wisdom “When presented with an opportunity that scares you, it’s usually worth doing.” FM
