Taking Diversity & Inclusive Leadership Beyond WORDS By R.V. Baugus You may be wondering why there is no image used for the cover
of this very important issue of FM magazine. The truth is, how do inclusion with one single image? I couldn’t. Because true diversity and inclusion is so much more than what you can see in a single image. It’s in who you are. It’s in what you feel. It’s in the absence of a stereotypical and cliched image that you just begin to show the meaning. It is in the absence of everything you have predetermined about this very important topic that you can just begin to fully accept and understand. Do you remember One Member, One Vote? It was an initiative dear to IAVM Past Chair Mark Mettes’ heart, one that he helped usher through in a vote of the association’s membership last year - From that campaign came current Chair Doug Booher’s push to
- tee. In the wake of One Member, One Vote, the desire to introduce IAVM members of all backgrounds into future volunteer leadership roles within the Association and, let’s face it, all the negative media - place environments, the timing could not have been better for this committee to be rebirthed as the Diversity and Inclusive Leadership Committee, chaired by Julia Slocombe and co-chaired by Robyn Williams, CVE. - cility Manager magazine. We consider this to be one of the most relevant issues of FM in
years, due primarily to the subject matter. A lot of people are asking what IAVM is doing or has to say about these issues, and we humbly submit the following pages for you to read from people inside and outside the industry touching on a series of topics of diversity and inclusive leadership. These are often hard issues to discuss or certainly to bring out in
print behind an individual’s byline. It is much easier to remain be- hind the scenes or give occasional lip service to hard subject matters that are not often just plain wrong in how we interact with each other but in many instances are illegal and criminal. When was the last day or week that went by without someone being accused or charged with some type of workplace malfeasance? See what I mean. The only way to truly capture the incredibly broad and deep scope
of diversity and inclusive leadership is to bring forth a number of number of topics that must be addressed if we as an association and better and more accurately the demographics of not just our com- munities but of the very guests who enter into our facilities. This is all well and good and I hope you will keep this issue of the magazine nearby as a quick reference tool, but words can only go so far. The Diversity and Inclusive Leadership Committee might be the new committee on the IAVM block, but it is one full of people with a serious passion to create change and understanding. I have the honor say that from just four committee calls that we have a group that is dedicated to the title name of this committee. The committee will sponsor an education session at VenueCon- nect in Toronto that we invite you to attend. It will not only be good for you but will help you when you return to your venue or business to have a better understanding of everyone you work with. It is also worth noting that the committee is comprised of – count ‘em – FIVE past presidents/chairs of IAVM in the persons of co- chair Robyn Williams, Jimmy Earl, CVE, Shura Garnett, CVE, John Siehl, CVE, and Kim Bedier, CVE. If this many of our great Association’s leaders consider diversity and inclusive leadership this important, shouldn’t you? FM
