What motivated you to earn your CVE (formerly CFE) and how do you think it will impact your career? to Wheeling after 23 years was really a trip back in time for me. Af- Chapter of IAVM that worked through the process together to get it done.
Jodi Lake and Jamie Galileo here in our Chapter were our
cheerleaders and helping us navigate through the process. We all four in their career paths. Hopefully, all the mistakes I have made can help alleviate some of the pain and hardships of others! Sometimes you don’t realize all of the things that you’ve done and
learned until you stop and try to process things. The CVE process really helped me understand that I’m not as dense as I think. I have learned things, I do know things, and have accomplished a lot in this journey.
You have mentored many young people over the years as they entered the venue management world. What do you hope they gained from that experience? What did you gain? I look back on my career and at all of those that have helped me get to where I am, and I realize how fortunate I am. This business is based on relationships and learning once opportunities are presented to us. It is so refreshing to look into the eyes of those young people and see Helping them and other young professionals to get started and
move along in their own careers is very rewarding and one small way that I can show my gratitude for what I have been provided. IAVM is a - es provided by IAVM should be taken advantage of. That is the whole purpose of IAVM - to help and aid industry professionals be better at what we do.
If you weren’t working as a venue professional, what would be your dream job? I would be a pro baseball scout. I love baseball and love the pace and the minor details of the game. I love being outside, and seeing kids trying to live their dreams would be very satisfying. Really, what can beat what we do for a living?
Your life experiences have allowed you to explore other parts of the world and to learn a second language. How do you feel those experiences shaped the person you are today? You never know where the world will take you and how it will impact your life once you get there. I had the wonderful opportunity to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints you serve in a foreign country, you have to learn to teach the people in their native language. So, I learned Korean. It’s not something that I
get to continue to use a lot, but there are opportunities that come up every now and again and the reaction is always the same, “How does this big, American guy know how to speak Korean?”
than myself. You don’t have a supervisor watching over you, and the we act and obey rules when no one is watching. We always reminded ourselves, “Forget yourself and go to work.” I had an elderly Korean man come up to me one day with tears in his eyes and thank me for being in Korea. His comment was based on the fact that our country has military bases there and our just being there kept the North Koreans from invading them. I told him that I was just a missionary, but he was so sincere in his gratitude for our country. - tries that really do need our help. into the man I am today.
Are there any favorite quotes or sayings that guide you in your professional or personal life? One of my favorite quotes is from the book written by Gale Sayers “I am Third.” The book is the basis for the movie Brian’s Song. The phrase references how we think and view life. Gale’s philosophy was - ness. Just imagine what the world would be like if there were more Gale Sayers in the world!
Your life changed in a very happy way when you became a grandfather. Tell us about that experience. Having children was one of the biggest life changing moments in my life. When your kids start having kids there are no words to describe the feelings. I have two grandkids. Lincoln is two, and Oakley joined us in December. So, we are just getting into this and every day changes come about and you just are amazed at the learning process of these kids. No matter how rough or tough your day has been, being able to see your grandkids run up to you with open arms just so happy to see “Bumpa” everything else goes away and nothing else matters. One thing that is an additional treat is seeing how your kids trans-
form into parents. Somedays, you look at your kids and you wonder what kind of person they will grow up to be and how will they be able to survive. Then when I see them parent their own children, you can see that they are going to be okay and that their children are going to be in better hands than they were. I am a blessed man!
With so many great experiences already under your belt, what tops your bucket list today? It’s really interesting to think about. A lot of us in this industry work have been blessed greatly to see things and be places that most people will never witness. On an away-from-work scenario, I have never been to Hawaii. I
would love to go to Hawaii with my family. I think that that would be and play golf with a few of my friends! FM
