At some point in your time as an IAVM member you may have asked, “What does our Board of Directors actually do?” Some may think of it as an honorary position for long-time members who have     - sidered it like a secret society that periodically meets to choose the   on the board, then you know that both are not exactly how and why the board exists. To help illuminate the role and work of the board, I would like to pull back the curtain to provide a detailed update from our latest meeting. In mid-January, our board, made up of 21 industry professionals

representing the various regions, sectors, and other constituencies, met in Dallas over three days to ensure that the Association’s work is being carried out with a keen focus on delivering on IAVM’s brand promise of inspiring leaders, building expertise, and creating connections for life. Through advance study of 24 key documents and reports, and 26 hours of face-to-face discussion, the board was fully engaged and produced great outcomes and input for our CEO, Brad Mayne, CVE, and his team at IAVM headquarters. In his report to the board, Brad shared the progress that is being made on several important initiatives. EMSSI, the exhibition safety initiative for convention centers, which will later be expanded to the other sectors, continues to progress in its path to implementation. There is also progress at work on an event economic impact calculator that will help our members communicate the value of their venues to their communities and regions. According to the annual member survey, as the Association grows, member satisfaction with our programs and services continues to increase. positive momentum as we look forward to gathering again this year in Toronto, and as sites are selected for future years. The sneak peek at the plans for Toronto left a very strong impression with the board that we have set a new standard for VenueConnect. IAVM’s other programs promise innovative enhancements, including AVSS, GuestX, Venue Management School, and Senior Executive Symposium, to ensure  - ious interests and levels of experience. throughout the year. Immediate Past Chair Mark Mettes, CVE, an- nounced that the Leadership Development Committee is completing its work to nominate the next second vice chair. Most importantly, the IAVM Board of Directors exists to serve you, the member. It is your direct link to the Association’s operation, and board members will always welcome your ideas, feedback, and espe- cially your concerns. I would like to thank the members of the board of directors, whose names can be found at the back of this issue of Facility Manager, as well as our committee chairs and members at large who share their valuable time, insights, and opinions that help inform the work of the board and Association. Your investment in IAVM makes it the great resource that it is today for our members throughout the world. FM
