Did You Know? – The May Day Stadium’s Darkest Moment?

It is believed that the May Day Stadium’s darkest moment occurred in the late 1990’s. Reports claim that a number of North Korean army generals wanted to change the ruling Kim regime, and initiated a secret plan to launch a coup. Unfortunately for them, their plan was discov- ered, and the conspirators arrested. After their interrogation, the Kim regime decided to send a message to any further schemers and traitors. To make their point distinctly clear, the generals were taken to the May Day Stadium. Rumours persist, but the story still told is that the generals were burnt alive, on stakes, in front of a now educated military audience about the consequences of disloyalty. Whether or not this did occur, it remains an indelible story linked with the May Day Stadium.

Fisher continues, “Nationalism and the exalted position of the North Korean army were key underlying themes to the whole per- formance, and in the second act, Arirang of Army-centered Policy, it   The Arirang Festival was full of North Korean iconography. It represented Mount Paektu, where Kim Jong-il is said to have been born in a log cabin. Presently, it is not reported if future Arirang Festivals are planned.

Nevertheless, The May Day Stadium continues to be the showcase facility of North Korea. Resplendent in its magnitude, it represents the ambition, nerve, and bravado of a country verifying itself to not only its own people, but also to the globe. FM
