Traffic applied at Ames, IA, over the five years
yielded no statistical significance. Conversely, Amherst, MA, traffic ratings demonstrated good separation as Dragster, Bentley, Rover, Spyder 2LS, and Triad finished with the highest overall turfgrass quality ratings. Intensive traffic was applied on the tall fescue trial at North Brunswick, NJ, during spring, summer, and fall. Data from 2019 showed some entry separation in fall traffic ratings. However, subsequent years showed little if any statistical separation when comparing the end-of-year ground cover percentages.
Perennial Ryegrass Perennial ryegrasses are occasionally used in
Multiple trials are underway at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst turfgrass research center.
Several diseases were noted during the five-year
trial but brown patch (Rhizoctonia solani) and typhula blight (Typhula spp.) delivered the most impactful data. Brown patch ratings from ten locations showed little overall significance, with 70 percent of entries statistically equal to the top entries Capitan, Degas, Finelawn Supreme, and Serenade. Typhula ratings showed much more statistical significance, likely due to only one year and the trial location’s data. A-TF31, DLFPS-321/3694, and PST-5DZM were the entries with the least Typhula disease symptoms.
sod mixtures because of positive attributes such as fast germination, better establishment under low and high temperatures, and traffic tolerance. A new trial of perennial ryegrass, established in 2022, consists of 83 entries, most being new experimentals. Data from year two has been summarized and is now available on our website. Data from 2024 was organized within only two
LPI groups, but also according to region. Similar to 2023, LPI group analysis showed small statistical differences among entries, while four geographic region analyses yielded significant variation in performance. Entries that have performed at, or close to, top performance in each region include APS, Grandslam G-LS, Siletz, DLF-PR-3728, CJP1R, and Homerun G-LS. Data separated and analyzed by golf course fairway management at three locations showed new entries PPG-PR 670, Siletz, PPG-PR 664, Exceed, and DLF-PR-3726 with the highest overall quality.
Tis grassy area in Washington DC shows the slow bermudagrass greenup and the damage to the overseeded ryegrass both due to excessive winter visitor traffic.
