and builders. Most of our business comes from deliveries (64 percent) and pickups (9 percent), and we also do a fair amount of sod installation work for builders (27 percent). It's a nice balance.”
David was one of the presenters of “10 Ideas in 50 Minutes” during TPI’s 2025 Conference in San Antonio. His topic, “Effective Tech-Less Communication Strategies,” focused on the three-ring binder he developed for staff members. It’s designed as a go-to resource, “if you have questions we have answers.” David says, “My background in classroom management helped me organize the office, which led me to the three-ring binder idea.”
David joined the Future Leaders Fellowship program to expand his professional network and deepen his understanding of the complexities of the turfgrass industry. David’s mentor from the first cohort is Adam Russell of MVP Genetics. “As someone new to the turf industry and the leadership program, my mentor’s guidance has helped me navigate expectations and maximize the experience. His insight into the program's structure and challenges has been particularly helpful, allowing me to focus on growth and development. I'm grateful for the support and look forward to continuing our relationship.”
Zac Hanka is David’s one-on-one connection. Zac visited
the Sod Shop as part of the group’s in-person meeting in the Kansas City area. David is looking forward to his scheduled visit to Zac’s farm in July. He says, “Teir farm in South Texas specializes in different varieties of turfgrass than we grow, so I'm excited to learn about their approaches, challenges, and best practices. I'm also expecting to gain valuable insights into new techniques, products, or strategies that I can apply to my work and share with my team.”
Nathan Whitaker has made a significant impact on the program, according to David. “I particularly appreciated our sessions in Kansas City, where I witnessed firsthand his exceptional facilitation skills and leadership approach. His ability to guide meaningful discussions and foster connections among participants is impressive. Although I wish we had more frequent interactions, the time spent with him has been enlightening, and I appreciate the leadership lessons he's shared.”
David says, “Te TPI Study Tour to Italy was an incredible experience, and one of the most beneficial aspects was forming meaningful connections with fellow sod farmers. I gained valuable insights into their operations, management strategies, and seasonal labor practices.”
David reports, “Te Future Leaders Fellowship program has enriched me in many ways. Te most significant gain has been the connections I've made with peers and TPI members. Tese relationships have opened doors to new perspectives, knowledge sharing, and potential

collaborations. I'm grateful for the network I've built, and I'm excited to see how these connections will continue to grow and benefit my career and the industry as a whole.”
David recommends the Future Leaders Fellowship program, especially to those new to the turfgrass industry and looking to build a career. “Te program offers invaluable networking connections, resources, and knowledge that can help navigate the industry's complexities. It’s an excellent opportunity for personal and professional development. I'd encourage anyone looking to make a meaningful influence in the industry to consider joining.”
