JONATHAN GREEN, INC. Provided by Barry K. Green II, President

Overall, yields this summer should be average to above average, and the quality will be average to above average. Across the board, pricing for all species/varieties is coming down but you must be very cautious to make certain that you are not being sold a contaminated grass seed lot.

Perennial Ryegrass: Acres have stayed the same, with no big changes. Good quality Perennial Ryegrass is in correct supply, but there is an over-supply of off-grade Perennial Ryegrass seed.

Tall Fescue: Acres are also about the same as last year, with no drastic change. Tere is an over-abundance of supply in all categories. Jonathan Green/Cascade Seed have plenty of good quality seed for spring and early fall plantings.

Jonathan Green introduced this cultivar, Frontier II Perennial Ryegrass, in 2024 noting its dark green color makes it a good match with the company’s Black Beauty Tall Fescue and Blue Panther Kentucky Bluegrass.

Jonathan Green, Inc. & Cascade International Seed Company Grass Seed Crop Report: Te upcoming grass seed harvest in Oregon is projected to be lower than last year. Total acreage for ryegrass and tall fescue is expected at 289,000 acres, down from 302,000 acres in 2024.

Tis decrease, combined with ongoing issues of oversupply, is likely to impact grass seed prices for these turfgrasses: Perennial Ryegrass, Tall Fescue, and Fine Fescue, and to a lesser extent Kentucky Bluegrass.

Te grass seed industry, particularly in Oregon, is facing challenges due to oversupply, which has been exacerbated since the Covid-19 pandemic when demand briefly surged. Tis oversupply, coupled with reduced demand, along with the monkey wrench of tariffs, which hurt international grass seed shipments, will lead to lower farm-gate contract prices for grass seed this year. Te final costs for grass seed will not be determined until the new harvest has been cleaned and is in the barn starting in July.

Tere has never been an excessive supply of "sod-quality" tall fescue or Kentucky bluegrass. On average, only about 25 percent of the grass grown in hopes of fulfilling sod growers seed orders actually ends up achieving sod quality grade. Jonathan Green and Cascade Seed always maintain a stable of sod quality seed to service the planting needs of our sod growers. Tere is a limited supply of "old crop" sod quality seed available for delivery before August 1st. We do still have a supply of elite Blue Panther Kentucky Bluegrasses and Black Beauty Tall Fescue varieties. We suggest you contact us soon so as not to be disappointed.

Crop Report on Specific Grass Seed Types: Te Oregon crops are looking good in May, with some timely rains to support growth. Last spring, plantings were delayed due to an early, wet spring. Tere is Poa annua and Annual Ryegrass present in some fields, which makes this seed unusable for growing sod.

Landmark Seed Company’s United Elite Kentucky Bluegrass, shown here in a Pacific Northwest seed production field, was introduced as a new cultivar in 2022.

Weather in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, has been dry as of late. Many farms with access to water are utilizing their irrigation equipment. Temperatures have been moderate, which

TPI Turf News July/August 2025

Kentucky Bluegrass: Te Kentucky Bluegrass acres have been reduced for dryland plantings, and there has been a slight decrease in price, but not as significant as the other grass types since there are fewer and fewer growers producing Kentucky Bluegrass. In fact, the entire crop is now under 80 million pounds of seed which is less than one-third the crop size of tall fescue and perennial ryegrass.

Fine Fescue: Tere is plenty of seed available across the fine fescue group, softening the price a little. Te crop should show average yields.

In summary, the upcoming harvest in Oregon is expected to be smaller, which, combined with the ongoing issues of oversupply and reduced demand, may lead to lower prices for various types of grass seeds, including Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass, Tall Fescue, and Fine Fescue. But buyer beware! Tere will be wolves parading in sheep's clothing this planting season.
