EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S TURF 2019 is in Full Swing!

Casey Reynolds, PhD

Te 2019 TPI Summer Convention & Field Day is in the books, and what an event it turned out to be! Over 560 TPI members and other attendees flocked into Minneapolis, Minnesota, for three days of networking, tours, and viewing equipment and products brought in by our always supportive supplier members. Attendees at the convention and field day included turfgrass producers from over 28 states in the U.S. and 10 countries—including those as far away as Australia and South Africa. It’s always a nice treat to be blessed with good weather and we certainly were this year. Tose who traveled from hot climates were surely not disappointed to be greeted by temperatures in the low 80s, overcast conditions, and a cool breeze. Tanks to everyone who took time out of their busy summer schedules to come spend a few days with us in Minneapolis. We fully recognize and appreciate the effort it takes to leave your families and farms for a few days, and we thank you for it. For a full recap of the 2019 TPI Summer Convention & Field Day, be sure to check out pages 22-29 of this issue.

One of the initiatives we’ve been working on in the last few months is how best to communicate the value of natural grass. Tis was the topic of the breakfast education session in Minneapolis and part of that presentation was the unveiling of TPI’s new website whose launch was designed to coincide with the Summer Convention. If you haven’t been to our website lately, give it a quick look to see new member resources, a new interface and online store experience for members, and new publications on the safety and health of natural grass. Tis is one of the core fundamentals of TPI’s strategic plan and we’re excited to provide these new tools. We will continue to upload new materials as we create them and hope that you use and share them locally to help spread the word on the value of natural grass. More information on the new website is presented on pages 38-43 in this issue of Turf News, but you can also take a live look for yourself at www.TurfGrassSod.org.

Lastly, Minneapolis also provided an opportunity for the TPI Board of Trustees to meet and discuss initiatives for 2020 and beyond. Te fall board meeting is quickly approaching, and as a result we will soon begin budgeting for 2020. Te 3-hour TPI Board meeting in Minneapolis was a chance for us to discuss progress on current projects as well as ideas for future projects. Among other things, we are currently working on promoting natural grass, monitoring and providing input on regulatory affairs, creating partnerships with other associations, and growing our membership domestically and internationally. Be on the lookout for more information on these initiatives throughout 2019 and early 2020, and as always please reach out to me if you have thoughts or ideas to share.

Tanks again to all of those who came out to Minnesota, and thanks especially to the Wagner Family for hosting us on their farm. We look forward to serving you and hope to see everyone in Orlando next February at the TPI 2020 International Education Conference & Field Day!

Cheers,
