PRESIDENT’S TURF Helping, Reflection and Gratitude
2017-2018 TPI Board of Trustees
Jimmy Fox
Fall is for planting … hurricanes, earthquakes, wild fires, and tropical storms. We all know someone who has been touched or affected by the uncontrollable forces of nature this year. We all get busy with fall plantings and shipping for the short fall season. I think it is important NOT to forget our extended family and friends in TPI who are still dealing with the aftermath of the wind, rain and flooding, displaced people, broken homes, broken equipment, and businesses that have been completely disrupted. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you, and we would like to turn our thoughts into actions. Please let us know if, and how we can help. We have started a relief fund. We are also trying to channel information through the TPI office so we can react to any needs. We all want to help, please let us, it would be our joy.
As the holiday season approaches, I think it is a great time to reflect on those in your life who have helped you along the way. We all have people that have physically supported us, emotionally picked us up, or through their mere actions mentored us as we grew. A former partner of mine called me to his hospital room as he was fighting his last battle with cancer. I had been hesitant to visit while he was weak from chemo treatments, but he insisted that I stop by. I walked into the room, and he was beaming from ear to ear. “About time you showed-up!” Frank exclaimed. I was worried about him, but he was worried about me! We talked about business and life for a long time. His strength began to wane, and he was getting tired. He chuckled and said, “I guess I should get to the point of why I called you here. You have great ability and great vision, what you sometimes lack is confidence. I see in you what you can’t see in yourself. Don’t be afraid to act on your ideas and thoughts. You have a gift, an ability to see what others don’t; you just need to act on it.”
I was a different, more confident person after that conversation. Frank Kolley’s words of encouragement have stuck with me for a lifetime. Te right words, said the right way, at just the right time. Never underestimate the power of your words. You have the ability to change someone’s day and perhaps their life with the way you choose and use your words.
At a time of year where people show gratitude by buying gifts, maybe, just maybe, the best thing you can give them is a word of encouragement, and the time it takes to share it.
May you and your family have a blessed and happy Holiday Season!
