PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE

As it was getting late in the afternoon and the event was nearing its conclusion, Raphael started to pack for the airport. He had already given his keys to the transport company who would be bringing his car home from the event. Then, while gathering his family for the trip out of Monterey, two gentlemen from the Concours staff dropped the rope in front of his car and waved to Raphael that he needed to follow them in his car to the awards ramp.
A shocked Raphael grabbed his keys back from the trans- porter and said that he wasn’t yet done with the car! Scott Reiner, the automotive detailer who had perfectly prepared the car, jumped in celebration like a champion athlete who had just scored the game-winning point! Raphael was no stranger to vic- tory, but this was the highest automotive recognition that he had received for any of his cars.
So Raphael opened the passenger door for his wife, got her seated (this was only the second time she had been in the car – the first was while participating in the Pebble Beach Tour on Thursday, for which they earned the green ribbon of completion to display on Sunday), and then got into the driver’s seat. He fired up the Lamborghini V12, which was running better than it had ever before due to a mechanical overhaul that was com- pleted just before the Monterey Weekend by Evans Automo- tive in Columbus, Ohio.
The Pebble Beach staff cleared the way through the crowd as Raphael followed and then got in line in front of the ramp, waiting for his call to the stage. After a few anxious minutes, the event announcer described the Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera class and then called Raphael to drive up and collect his third place award. Raphael proceeded across the ramp while what seemed like endless cameras and camera phones focused on him. After accepting his award, the crown of his day at the Concours, he returned to his spot on the lawn and reconnected with the transport driver. Quickly handing off his keys, he dashed to the Monterey airport to catch his flight home.
